Lake Como and Lake Lugano aboard a vintage car
Time requested: 1 or 2 days
Lake Como is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Lombardy and in particular the western side, we start driving along the Street “Via Regina” that offers beautiful views and many points of interest such important villas (Villa Carlotta and Balbianello) and picturesque villages. Our itinerary starts from Tremezzo, direction Lucagno, we get into the valley of Porlezza and here the road climbs with hairpin bends, behind Menaggio, offer beautiful views of the lake and on the mosaic of the roofs of the village.
You enter then in a green valley, leaving on the left the Piano small lake, and reach Porlezza, located on the forested banks of Lake Lugano. We cross the border with Switzerland, following the road going always highest, that offer beautiful views of the lake and in short time we reach Lugano.
It is certainly worth to take a walk into the city. The old town, with a medieval arrangement, is made up of old houses that face with their arcades of narrow streets; but on the lake we will find large open squares, XVIII century buildings and many cafes that put tables outside, typical Italian scenery.
Continue the tour by following the street getting out of the city, driving along the lake going from Morcote to Lugano (on direction of Ponte Tresa and before Agno take left to Morcote , there is a picturesque medieval village) then cross the Switzerland border from Chiasso and get into Como City.
From here we go along the lakeshore, and enter on the street N340, called Via Regina, which in many places is still old fashion with its tortuous path between the houses of the country and along the lake side. We arrive to Cernobbio (beautiful the lakefront with the ferry boats) and continue along the road passing the beautiful Villa d'Este, now used as a hotel and conference center.
Shortly after the road splits: the right side get you on high over the lake offering good views, while on the left you will drive along the old road that runs through the villages and next to the lake side. After five km the two streets join back together: and the street is linear till Argegno and then Ossuccio, a small village opposite the island Comacina characterized by unusual bell towers. We continue reaching Lenno, where lies the splendid Villa del Balbianello that can be reached only by boat with a special boat service.
Continue reaching Tremezzo where we can visit the famous Villa Carlotta.
